Buchanan Street Mall Nears Late-2026 Reopening as New Play Area and Memory Walk Take Shape

WESTERN ADDITION, San Francisco — Construction at Buchanan Street Mall continues in the Western Addition, with San Francisco Recreation and Parks reporting substantial progress in its October 21, 2026 update.

The five-block pedestrian park from Eddy Street to Grove Street is receiving new paths, landscaping, lighting, play and exercise equipment, and a Memory Walk reflecting the neighborhood’s culture and history. The city’s October update said children’s play features and equipment for adults and seniors had been installed while crews continued finishing pavement, metalwork and electrical connections.

The project is targeting completion toward the end of 2026, not declaring every section open today. Construction near the park can still cause changing sidewalk detours and temporary access limitations for residents of neighboring housing. The city advises using posted routes rather than crossing active work areas.

Residents can follow the park department’s project news and contact its project manager for construction concerns, including accessible routes to building entrances. The renovation is part of a broader community-driven initiative involving neighborhood organizations and public and private funding.
